10 Natural benefits of eating walnuts

The ‘Juglans regia’ is a tree originally native to Persia that has a rich history of cultivated use. The edible seeds of the Juglans regia are what we refer to as walnuts, a nutrient rich nut that is used by many cultures across the globe. The oil from walnuts has been used traditionally to treat colic, diarrhea, hemorrhoids and to soothe the intestines.

Some of the key health benefits of eating walnuts include:

  • Brain health - Due to the high levels of Omega fatty acids found in walnuts they are able to help combat depression as well as improve cognitive function. Walnuts have also been shown to increase melatonin production, helping you to get a restful nights sleep.

  • Relieve Constipation Walnuts are a great source of dietary fiber, helping to put pressure on the intestinal walls and stimulate movement of waste.

  • Improve cardiovascular health – The acids found in walnuts are known to help reduce levels of LDL bad cholesterol, this in turn promotes the production of good cholesterol. It’s also thought that just one small handful of walnuts a day could help to combat high blood pressure.

  • During pregnancy - Walnuts contain high levels of elements like zinc, manganese and chromium these are all essential to the human body. It is also effective to use walnut to treat cough and asthma.

  • Inflammatory disease – If you’re looking for a nut with anti inflammatory properties walnut reigns supreme, Walnuts are a great source of alpha-linolenic-acid or ALA. The body turns this ALA into Omega-3-fatty acids that help to reduce swelling of joints as well as calm inflammation.

  • Bone health - Walnuts contain a wide spectrum of trace minerals that are essential for proper bone development and growth these include boron, copper, and manganese.

  • Better sleep – Walnuts contain melatonin a substance that is produced in our bodies by the pineal gland, melatonin is responsible for many roles within the body, but is thought to be largely responsible for regulating our internal clock.

  • Moisturize skin – Walnut oil is both non greasy and quick drying, packed full of vitamins, including vitamins (E, B1, B2, B3, Niacin) walnut oil is even used as an ingredient in many commercial anti wrinkle creams.
